ST. LOUIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Twenty-eight of America’s best chess players have gathered at the St. Louis Chess Club in St. Louis, America’s chess capital, for the 2022 US Women’s Chess Championship, which will be held October 4-20, 2022.
Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana has won the 2022 US Chess Championship, his second national title after a first-time US Championship draw with rival GM Levon Aronian in the final round. Caruana took home the $60,000 top prize, while GM Ray Robson finished second, earning $45,000.
“I want to thank everyone who made chess possible in St. Louis and in the United States,” Caruana said as he received his second US Championship trophy. “I have been playing chess here for six years and I have had the opportunity to see all my colleagues grow and develop, while at the same time making chess stronger in this country, because I am very proud and honored.”
20-year-old female grandmaster Jennifer Yu has been crowned the 2022 US Women’s Champion, her second title after defeating eight-time US Women’s champion Irina Krush in an Armageddon tiebreak playoff. Yu took first place in the $40,000 US Championship, while GM Irina Krush took home the second prize of $30,000.

At the 2022 US Chess Championship, the top five players Fabiano Caruana, Ray Robson, Leiner Dominguez, Avonder Liang and Wesley So will qualify for the World Championship. The top two finishers at the 2022 US Women’s Chess Championship, WGM Jennifer Yu and GM Irina Krush, will qualify for the Women’s World Championship. Some of these players named above will qualify for the World Championship by other means, in which case those invitations will be awarded to the next player in the 2022 USA Chess Championship and USA Women’s Championship standings.
