(ABC News 6) – They say opinion is important, but it’s probably true if you get what you want back.
Although some stores allow you to return anything, even without a receipt, others are more strict.
Nordstrom has one of the softest points, often unlimited and no receipt required for most returns.
But that’s not what happens this year!
“Some retailers have made their return policies more restrictive this year, even as they eliminate additional covid policies or reduce premiums due to inflation,” says Consumer Reports’ Samantha Gordon. “What that means for you as a consumer is that if you’re thinking of buying anything you want to take back, make sure you read the rules carefully first.”
Bed Bath & Beyond used to give consumers a year to return, but now the return window is 90 days for most items. Limited to electronics and smart home products.
LL Bean used to allow returns with no time limit and no receipt required, but now customers have one year, and only if you can show proof of purchase.
Kohl’s gives consumers up to 180 days to return most purchases. No receipt? No problem. The store can track your previous purchases.
You’ll have 90 days to return items at Walmart, Target, and Macy’s, but not all items are eligible for online shopping.
At Costco, electronics and appliances must be returned within 90 days. But for most items they sell, there is no time limit on returns and you do not need a receipt.
Amazon is extending the return window to 30 days, but during the holidays, most items can be returned until the end of January! Just be aware that items purchased through other retailers may have different return policies.
“The best way to get that cash back or store credit is to make sure you don’t open any of the packaging and keep the gift receipt if you have one,” says Gordon.
Another tip, you can save a lot of money on shipping if you order online.
Don’t worry most retailers will let you return to the store on your own. Don’t forget to bring your ID.
To limit people who try to hack their return systems, some merchants scan and store information from your ID to track your purchases and returns.
