LANSING, Mich. – Attorney General Dana Nessel is reminding Michiganders to shop carefully as the holiday shopping season approaches for the 2022 season.

Whether you want to shop online or in stores this year, Nessel is for the year holiday consumer protection campaign helps inform shoppers of the tricks and Grinches they may encounter before Christmas.

“Festivals are the time of the year when we gather to celebrate traditions and spend time with family. “Unfortunately, it’s also the time of year when criminals take advantage of the increase in consumer spending to gain personal and financial information,” says Nessel. “Michigan residents should have peace of mind this holiday season and should take advantage of the savings available through the department of the Attorney General to protect himself from fraudsters.”

Nessel advises consumers that protect their credit card accounts by associating strong, unique passwords with PINs. Don’t forget to shred documents that contain confidential information before throwing them away.

The state attorney general’s office said it is important to do the following earlier online shopping:

  • Know the vendors you’re shopping at, and check out the ones you don’t know. Avoid buying from websites if you can’t find their location or phone number.
  • Search for pictures of the products you are considering buying and learn where the product will be shipped from. Look this for more information.
  • Use a credit card to shop online.
