Antonio agreed to draw a chess match in Italy

MANILA—Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. used the black pieces for 14th place in Round 9 of the 30th International FIDE World Chess Championship against International Master Angelo Abundo Yang in an 11-way draw (50+ and 65 + Open-men and women) held on Thursday at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy.

Antonio, his trip is sponsored by the Philippine National Chess Federation, the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee, the Philippine Amusement and Entertainment Corporation, the San Miguel Corporation, Senator Bong Go, Col. Jaime Osit Santos and the Bayanihan Chess Club. Founders Chairman Dr. Joe Balinas raised the total to 6.0 points, Young, IM Krizsany Laszlo from Hungary, IM Renzo Mantovani from Italy, IM William Paschall from USA, WGM Elvira Behrend from Luxembourg, GM Henrik Danielsen from Iceland, IM Sergio Rocha from Italy, IM Poul from Denmark Revitz, IM Gerard Welling from the Netherlands and IM Frank Zeller from Germany.

GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia took the personal lead in the 50+ category with 7.5 points, defeating GM Ivan Morovich Fernandez of Chile in a heavyweight battle.

Fernandez remains on 7.0 points and drops to 2nd-3rd with Italian IM Fabrizio Bellia.

GM Antonio will face FM Rewitz, while IM Young will face GM Danielsen in the next round.

International Master and Fide Master Jose Efren of Bahamas defeated I.M. Malkiel Peretz of Israel.

The 66-year-old Bahamian remains at 5.0 in the over-65 category. He will face Welshman Davis Lee in the next round.-Marlon Bernardino-
