Ashwagandha and apple cider vinegar sales soar as consumer spending on herbal remedies continues: ABC report | So Good News


Sales in 2021 grew by more than $1 billion, making it the second strongest year for these sales behind 2020 which rose 17.3%, which was driven largely by immune system support equipment. While immune-boosting herbs such as elderberry continued to post strong sales numbers, herbs for health, mood support, energy, and sleep also generated significant growth.

The most popular herbs in both the major and natural ways were ashwagandha and apple cider vinegar. The finalists moved up to third on the major channel with $178 million in sales. This represents a growth of 129% from 2020. This represents a meteoric rise for apple cider vinegar (ACV), which was not in the top 10 selling herbs in 2019 on a large scale.

Impressive growth has also been channeled into organic growth, with additional ACV sales growing 105% to reach $7.7 million in 2021.

The biggest growth in sales in the mainstream was for herbal medicines containing ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), which increased 226% in 2021 versus 2021 to $92 million. In organic terms, sales of ashwagandha rose by 23% to $16.7 million, placing it at number four on the top-selling list.

According to a monograph from the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP), Ashwagandha has a history of use in ayurvedic medicine that dates back 4,000 years to the teachings of the famous sage Punarvasu Atreya, and in subsequent works that make up the ayurvedic tradition. The herb’s name comes from Sanskrit, and means “smells like a horse”, referring to the strong smell of the root which is said to produce horse sweat or urine.

Ashwagandha root is a well-known adaptogen – a substance believed to increase the body’s ability to cope with various stressors.

The top spot on the highway continued to be occupied by elderberry (Sambucusspp., Viburnaceae), and $274 million in sales in 2021. This was a slight decrease (0.2%) on the figure for 2020. Even this fall, sales of elderberry exceeded $31 million in organic form, placing the botanical in third place on the top sales list.

The biggest growth in sales in the organic sector came from quercetin, a flavonol found in apples and onions, with sales increasing by 137.8% from 2020 to 2021 to $15.1 million.

While some herbs rose, others fell, and hemp-derived CBD (cannabidiol) also posted record lows. In particular, sales of CBD in branded and organic brands fell by 32% and 24%, respectively. However, CBD herbal medicine retained its top spot in natural remedies, with $39 million in sales.

“In 2021, sales of CBD in natural form amounted to $38,931,696, a decrease of 24%. This was less than the decrease of about 37% that occurred in 2020,” wrote ABC reporters. “Sales appear to have peaked in 2019, with consumers of natural alternatives spending more than $90.7 million on these products. Interestingly, the top three herbal sellers in the organic category all saw sales declines: In addition to CBD, sales of turmeric (#2) fell 5.7% to $38 million and elderberry (#3) fell 41% to $31.2 million. The most notable decrease in the natural method was Echinacea-goldenseal (-40%) and oregano (-31%).

Echinacea was also down 24% on the main channel, but still posted $41 million in sales in 2021.
