U.S. President Joe Biden visited Syracuse on Thursday to celebrate a $100 billion investment by semiconductor and chip company Micron Technology in downtown New York.

If there was a theme to Thursday’s Micron event at Onondaga Community College, it might have been “hope.”

Hochul said the partnership with Micron turns the page on a new New York era.

“We don’t need to be Silicon Valley or the Triangle region in North Carolina,” Hochul said. “This isn’t just the Chips Corridor. This is Chips Country. This is New York State, and we’re going to build this in New York.”

A Syracuse University Law School graduate, Biden was welcomed back to Syracuse by a crowd to celebrate one of the largest investments in American history. Micron’s investment will ensure a Made in America future, he said.

“One of the bright spots across the country. It should give us hope and optimism about who we are as a nation,” Biden said. “It’s part of a broader story about an economy we’re building. The president continued to emphasize the “Made in America” ​​mindset, saying his administration has created 700,000 manufacturing jobs so far.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra received a standing ovation before and after his remarks. He said that once the Micron factory is fully built, it will produce nearly four billion chips a year, each chip containing billions of pieces of information.

“The fabs we’re building here at Clay will be an important part of Micron’s global manufacturing network, creating leading-edge memory chips for use in the most demanding electronic applications around the world,” said Mehrotra. “Clay, New York can proudly say that they are home to some of the most advanced productions in the world.”

Biden said he has never been more optimistic about America’s future.

“We use the word transformative all the time,” Biden said. “But this is a transition and it’s not just here. But this is mainly here, so I want to thank you all. This is a great day for downtown New York, but it’s also a great day for the United States. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who helped lead the charge on CHIPS and the Science Bill, said Biden’s legacy is forever secure in Syracuse.

“Syracuse has always been part of President Biden’s history,” Schumer said. “But now, because of the president’s leadership, Mr. President has changed the history of Syracuse forever. This is a good day for upstate New York. A great day for America.”
