MANILA, Philippines – There are five matches left in the preliminary games of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Open Conference, and fewer seats left on the playoff bus.

In the North Division, two squads are fighting for dear life, namely Rizal Bach Towers (12-16, eighth) and Quezon City Simba Tribe (11-17, ninth).

This Saturday, they both play opposite matches to advance to the second round of the conference.

Rizal’s task will be easier as they will play previously eliminated Mindoro (3-25) and Olongapo (1-27). Still, none of the latter could be a surprise, so Batch Towers can’t take them for granted.

Quezon City faces Olongapo, but has a Herculean task against northern and league-leading league leader Pasig (26-2) as they hold a 434.5 point advantage over the Davao Chess Eagles’ 26-2 and 432 points. .

In the South, it won’t be any easier for the Tacloban Vikings (10-18, eighth) and the Cebu Mahers (10-18, ninth).

Tacloban is in line with Iloilo (26-4) and Negros (23-5), while Cebu is easier on paper against Cagayan de Oro-Misamis East (8-20) and unexpected PECA leaders (5-13).

Important PCAP matches can be viewed on the league’s Facebook page as well as individual team pages.
