Students will discuss the effects of inflation, rising energy costs on agriculture.

Last week, the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) and the Mississippi Energy Institute (MEI) hosted a panel discussion with Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum.

The panel discussion focused on rising energy prices in agriculture and the hit by inflation, which has reached a 40-year high.

In Mississippi, 17% of the state’s workforce is directly or indirectly employed, making it the state’s largest business by revenue.

“Mississippi farmers in 2021 got a big harvest; however, this production cost was offset by higher prices due to inflation,” ECA said in a release.

Congressman Guest said the rising cost of electricity is leading to higher prices for everything – affecting families across our community as they struggle to afford gas and groceries.

“To address these costs, I am fighting for stronger domestic legislation through my work in Congress,” Guest said. “I am excited for the opportunity to work with the Consumer Energy Alliance, the Mississippi Energy Institute, and other experts in this field to achieve our common goal of reducing energy costs and protecting our nation’s independence.”

Patrick Sullivan, president of the Mississippi Energy Institute, said bad energy laws lead to lower energy bills and more energy.

“As farmers, businesses and families struggle with high prices, it is important for all to understand the root causes of today’s economic crisis,” Sullivan said. “Across the country, more informed people can help prevent future problems.”

CEA vice president and director of the Gulf Coast, Kaitlin Hammons, said that one of the problems of the rising cost of electricity is the rising cost of electricity that farmers and other farmers use to raise the prices of products, or to squeeze family farmers who are facing financial problems.

“Mississippi and other Gulf states contribute to America’s economy through their offshore energy industry, which has been under attack by activists and other political leaders,” Hammons said. “Farmers, families and small businesses are hurting as higher prices for fertilizer, diesel, gasoline and propane add to inflation in a struggling nation.
