DATCP Provides Consumer Advice for the Holidays | So Good News

MADISON, Wis. – With the holiday season fast approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) encourages consumers to shop wisely. Good Friday is still one of the most popular shopping and shopping events in the United States, but holiday sales have already begun. Customers should keep these instructions in mind to protect their wallets and personal data while shopping.

  • toAlso check the seller’s policies returns, exchanges, and shipping and handling before purchase. If this is not available, contact customer service.
  • Learn more about safety, especially for toys and other gifts for children.
    Look for age and safety certifications from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Check out the recalled toys on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website: CPSC.gov.
  • Remember that sellers must respect the lowest price of the product. Make sure things are properly mounted on the way out. Politely ask the cashier or customer representative to correct any errors.

When you shop at the store:

  • onFind out if sales prices are needed up to a few hours, models, colors, etc. before you buy. Products may be ‘doorstep’ or subject to certain limitations. Read the fine print.
  • Chello for messing around before buying a gift card. Make sure the protective stickers are intact and the PINs are not exposed. Use gift cards quickly, as they may expire or incur fees.
  • Make sure the QR code is valid and it’s not messed with stickers, and it doesn’t try to cheat before you watch it. Real businesses use QR codes; however, scammers can make it too.

When shopping online:

  • toAvoid using public Wi-Fi to sell. Hackers may be monitoring their payment details.
  • Do not allow unreliable cookies. Cookies are data stored on your device that are used by legitimate companies for advertising, and for tracking your online activity.
  • Always make sure your website is legit before entering any personal data. Don’t trust this website based on what it looks like – make sure the address is correct and not just based on your content or payment.​​
