MANILA — Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. squared off with International Master Angelo Abundo Young to form an 11-way tie for 14th place in Round 9 of the 30th FIDE World Chess Championship (50+). and 65+ Open-Men and Women) held on Thursday, November 24, 2022 at the Cenacolo Hotel in Assisi, Umbria, Italy.
GM Antonio raised his total to 6.0 points, the same as Young, Hungarian IM Krizsany Laszlo, IM Renzo Mantovani. From Italy, IM William Paschal (USA), WGM Elvira Behrend of Luxembourg, General Henrik Danielsen of Iceland, IM Sergio Rocha of Italy, Foreign Minister Poul Revitz of Denmark, IM Gerard Welling of the Netherlands and Frank Zeller of Germany.
GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia took the personal lead in the 50+ category with 7.5 points, defeating GM Ivan Morovich Fernandez of Chile in a heavyweight battle.
Fernandez remains on 7.0 points and drops to 2-3 along with Italian IM Fabrizio Bellia.
GM Antonio will meet FM Rewitz, while IM Yang will face GM Danielsen in the next round.
International Master and Fide Master Jose Efren of Bahamas defeated I.M. Malkiel Peretz of Israel.
The 66-year-old Bahamian remains at 5.0 in the over-65 category. He will face Welshman Davies Lee in the next round.
