Third quarter 2022 chart from the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) Intermodal Quarterly Report.
Third quarter 2022 total intermodal volumes fell 1.0% year over year based on a 27.7% decline in intermodal trailer traffic, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) Intermodal Quarterly Report. Domestic containers and international containers rose by 1.5% and 0.1% respectively.
IANA reported on October 28 that the seven highest-density trade corridors, which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume, showed mixed results in the three months ended September 30, 2022. While the Trans-Canada Corridor and the Midwest-Southwest were up 6.1% and 1.7%, respectively, from the same period last year, Midwest-Northwest recorded a decrease of 14.7%, followed by South-Central-Southwest and Southeast-Southwest at 13.9%, and Intra -Southeast at 8.5%. The Northeast Midwest held losses to 0.5%.
“The positive numbers for domestic and international containers are an indication of increasing network fluidity and reduction in congestion,” said IANA President and CEO Joni Casey. “Further gains are expected in the fourth quarter, which could offset some of the losses during the first half of the year.”
In a related development, the IANA reported in August that the decline in intermodal volumes slowed in the second quarter of 2022.
