Israeli companies agree to use CO2 emissions for glass production.

Phenicia, the country’s only glass producer, and Israel’s Airovation Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding to install technology that converts the factory’s carbon dioxide emissions into minerals that can be used in the glassmaking process.

After more than a decade of research at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Airovation Technologies has developed a method to capture sodium carbon dioxide as it is released from carbon dioxide.

Soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate, is a key ingredient in glassmaking. Its extraction from CO2 is done through a patented chemical invention that uses Superoxide Radical, the most powerful antioxidant in nature.

Airovation also produces food, other products from carbon dioxide that can be sold in Israel. It is also being worked on for use in the animal feed and fertilizer industries.

The new MOU with Phenicia, located south of Yeruham, will see Airovation scale up in two phases, eventually leading to the first commercial unit. This will reduce Phenicia’s global warming carbon emissions, contribute to the circular economy and reduce the company’s dependence on soda ash imports, Airovation said in a statement.

“By partnering with Israel’s only glass manufacturer, we have taken important steps to not only implement our technology, but to revolutionize the glass industry in our homeland,” said Gil Tomer, co-founder and COO at Airovation.

Michel Ben Simon, CEO of Phenicia, said, “Phoenicia is thrilled to support an Israeli startup and partner in the execution of this pilot.”

Ben Simon noted that Phenicia is the only facility in the country that can recycle collected glass bottles within the framework of the national deposit law.

Phenicia has built a natural gas-fired power plant that is expected to start operating in two months, he said, adding that the plant was installed ten years ago to prevent nitrogen oxides and particulate pollution.

Earlier this month, Airovation Technologies partners with Korea-based Kolon Industries Inc. to scale up three levels of carbon capture. and announced the MOU.
