Johnson & Johnson MedTech announced today that Ph.D. announced the promotion of Ahmet Tezel to the position of Group Chairman and Global Head of Innovation and Research at MedTech.

Tezel replaces Peter Shen, Ph.D., who is stepping down later this year after a career at J&J spanning more than 25 years.

Tezel will join Medtech’s global leadership team and report to J&J MedTech EVP and Worldwide Chairman Ashley McEvoy as the division focuses on making its products and services “smarter, less invasive and more personalized,” according to a company press release.

Tezel currently serves as Worldwide Vice President of R&D for J&J Medtech’s Ethicon business. Under his leadership, the value of Ethicon’s R&D pipeline increased by more than 300%, the company said.

“Ahmet also played a key role in creating synergies between the Ethicon and Robotics and Digital Solutions teams to improve the integration of technology platforms and leverage product development best practices,” the company said. “Ahmet joins Johnson & Johnson with extensive experience in the medical technology industry, including a strong history of driving innovation strategy, bringing new products to market, and retaining and promoting key talent. He is a Credo-based leader dedicated to developing people and creating an inclusive work environment.”

Tezel previously held research and development leadership roles at Alcon and Allergan. His Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Transdermal Drug Delivery and Vaccination from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey.

Tezel will continue to live in Summit, New Jersey with his family.
