MANILA, Philippines – Youthful sensation April Joy Claros stunned women’s grandmaster contender Kaylen Joy Mordido in the ninth and final round.
Claros, of Far Eastern University-Diliman, chased down Olympic veteran Mordido by six points from the first to claim the crown via the second-to-last rule.
It was Claros’ third win after ruling the Under-20 division of the National Youth Championship in Malolos last month and the National Youth and Schools Championship in Dapitan.
The feat qualified 15-year-old Claros for the Asian Junior Championships in Tagaytay City from November 17-26, where he has the chance to win the international master title, or WGM standard, if he beats his opponents. and on top of that.
Meanwhile, IM Daniel Quizon defeated IM Michael Concio via a tiebreaker to take control of the boys competition.
Both Quizon and Concio, 18, have seven wins and a tie at 7.5 points per game.
