MANILA—Arena grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo defended well with the white pieces and scored a stunning victory over Rey Julius Taguba to stay on top of the Paraiso Enterprises, Inc. FIDE 1st Marinduque Chess Tournament after six rounds. Held at the Farm. Boac, Marinduque on Saturday.

The win came after Lorenzo, one of PCAP’s top Laguna Heroes players, defeated Cristian Nanola in the fifth round on Friday to win the Boac Knight Chess Club, Inc. came after reaching 5.5 points halfway through the 9-round Swiss system event organized by the president. Engr. Lauro Bautista and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, RMB Paraiso Enterprises, Inc. Farm, Bahay sa Kanto Cafe and Green Metro Builders Dev’t, Inc. supported by Giovanni Buhain of the company.

Earlier, Lorenzo defeated Richard Pelaez in the first round, halved the score against Robert Neil Matak in the 2nd round, beat Jersi Martisio in the third round and Jeremy Martisio in the fourth round in 1 hour + 30 seconds. increment is a Philippine National Chess Federation sanctioned tournament.

“This is a quarterly event. We want to produce many FIDE ranked players in Marinduca and eventually produce chess masters,” said Engr. Lauro Bautista, President of Boac Knight Chess Club, Inc.

The champion will receive P10,000 plus a trophy. Second place will receive P7,000, third will receive P5,000, fourth will receive P2,000 and fifth will receive P2,000.
