The ultimate goal of this initiative was to map the global problems of food production and propose more sustainable ways of production to support the growth of the world’s growing population. For example, the study found that India, China, the US, Brazil and Pakistan are the countries that cause the most environmental changes with food production.

Lab-grown seafood industry to overcome legal hurdles

Animal cell culture technology is developing rapidly, with some countries approving its commercialization, but a report from the University of Birmingham warns of legal implications for the lab-grown seafood industry. The document says that trademark policies and cultural differences can hinder regulation of this market.

When considering these environmental changes, the study mainly analyzed aspects such as greenhouse gas emissions, water use, habitat destruction and pollution, including sewage or fertilizers. These data were important for understanding the “big picture” and making global food production more balanced and sustainable.

The study also looked at the effectiveness of different types of food. For example, American soybean production is twice as efficient as that of India.
