This Pendleton Travel Chess & Checkers roll up game is a canvas game board with 32 silk screen wooden game pieces that allow you to play chess or checkers.

The Pendleton family company, first founded in 1863, is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and has been weaving world-class wool at two mills in the Pacific Northwest for over a century.

This travel kit is designed to be packed and used on family holidays and camping trips. Once rolled, it’s about the size of a water bottle – 10″ x 2″ – and 10″ x 14″ ready to play.

A canvas game board is an 8×8 grid that allows you to play chess or checkers. You rotate the pieces to reveal either checkers or chess pieces, depending on what you want to play.

Chess is believed to have originated in India around 700 BC, but it has evolved considerably from its original form. Checkers may actually predate chess, having been played as early as 3000 BC, and its “checkerboard” board may have influenced the layout used in chess.

Both games can use the same 8×8 board, and as a result, you simply need different pieces to play both games – which gave rise to travel sets, which, as you can see here, were first created hundreds of years ago.
