PH chess master Elle Castronuevo wins gold in Thailand

MANILA—Young Elle Castrouevo from Imus City, Cavite was crowned champion at the 6th East Asia (ASEAN) Youth Chess Championship held at the Asia Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday, November 5.
Joining the under-8 girls class, she played 7 rounds in a rapid chess tournament. Eight-year-old Castronuevo, a third-grader at Imus Pilot Elementary School, beat all his opponents, winning 7 out of 7 to win the title.
He stood out among all the others and was considered the best player in Team Philippines.
Mary Janel Tan and Glacia Ann Hilario won silver and bronze in the under-10 girls category.
Meanwhile, Daren dela Cruz of Dasmarinas, Cavite, Elpidio “Peedy” Jr. Frani Barzaga and playing under national coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas scored a perfect 7 points in the girls’ 12- and 14-under team division.
One of Far Eastern University’s best players, Diliman Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro City, grabbed the silver medal with six points, while Rayen Bahita of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental ended the Philippines’ dominance. four indicator groups.
Lexi Grace Hernandez and April Joy Claros, both from Angeles City, Pampanga, won the silver and bronze medals in the girls’ team under-16 and under-18 respectively.

The one-day event was a 7-round Rapid Blitz of 15 minutes plus 5 seconds overtime, and according to National Master/National Arbiter Rodolfo “Rudy” Toledo, the second-to-last day’s competition was followed by a standard 30-minute chess competition.
Up to 200 indoor participants from 12 countries of East Asia in the categories of boys and girls under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years of age took part in the chess tournament.
Supported by the Philippine National Chess Federation and the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine team won 3 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals. Toledo in the rapid chess tournament on the opening day of the East Asia Junior Chess Championship.
