Thane: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials are said to have completed 85% work on the second phase of Kopri Railway Over Bridge on Eastern Express Highway (EEH) after the installation of a girder on Sunday morning.
The 2+2 field has now been expanded to a 4+4 field and only concretization remains, the officials said. “Once completed, the traffic problem on the EEH will be solved,” they added.
Once completed, this bridge will provide relief to motorists traveling from Mumbai to Thane, Nashik, Gujrat and Pune.
Seven girders for the first phase of the bridge were installed in July 2021.
Work to widen the bridge, which was built in 1965, has been delayed several times. Over the past few years, many agencies, including the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) have been assigned the work. Now, however, the MMRDA has taken over.
The extension of Kopri bridge was first proposed 13 years ago when the cost of extension was ₹NOK 9 million. The delay in the implementation of the plan has escalated the costs to ₹NOK 258.76 million.
