Indian Railways wants to tender 16 railway stations under the public-private partnership (PPP) route for redevelopment purposes. According to senior officials, familiar with the development, the aim is to put these stations out to tender within the current year.

Anand Vihar, Thane, Tambram, Dadar, Kalyan and Andheri stations are on the list. Railway stations in Pune, Coimbatore, Bangalore City, Baroda, Bhopal, Chennai Central, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin, Avadi and Vijayawada are likely to be part of this redevelopment.

“These railway stations are to be upgraded to ensure better basic facilities and accessibility for the passengers. Various monetization models are being explored to encourage the private sector, an official told ET.

The Ministry of Railways previously aimed to start work on the ground at around 30-40 stations during the current financial year.

Responding to questions in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that the Rani Kamlapati and Gandhinagar railway stations have been developed and commissioned under the new station redevelopment programme. The Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal in Bengaluru is ready for commissioning.

This is in addition to the 1,253 railway stations identified for development under the Adarsh ​​Station Scheme. Of these, 1,213 railway stations have been developed and the remaining 40 stations are targeted for development in the financial year 2022-23, Vaishnaw said.
