The Railway Board has issued guidelines to increase the maximum permissible speed for all high density Golden Quadrilateral and Golden Diagonal (GQ-GD) routes from 110 kmph to 130 kmph. In Southern Railway, Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Chennai Central – Gudur and PuratchiThalaivarDr MGR Chennai Central – Renigunta fall under the GQ-GD route category.

According to Southern Railway, “Consequent to the speed upgradation of the Chennai – Gudur section to 130 km/h, when the new timetable for implementation of increased speed comes into effect, the passengers going to Andhra Pradesh destinations, New Delhi, Howrah and Mumbai benefit from this. from a significant reduction in travel time.”

“A similar speed upgrade is proposed for the Chennai – Renigunta section, which connects the city with the pilgrimage center of Tirupati. It is also proposed to upgrade the speed of ‘B’ routes in sections viz., Arakkonam – Jolarpet – Podanur-Shoranur, Thiruvananthapuram – Kayankulam – Alleppey – Ernakulam , Shoranur-Mangaluru, Chennai Egmore – Villupuram – Tiruchchirappalli – Dindigul section, by 2024-25,” according to a Southern Railway statement.

BGMallya, General Manager, Southern Railway said that the public notification for running trains at a maximum permissible speed of 130 km/h Chennai – Gudur section will be released soon. He also complimented the officials for the exemplary work done to increase the speed limit.

The permit to run at a maximum permitted speed of 130 km/h was granted on 5 October. This has been achieved by the Zone with a systematic and planned approach to strengthen the track, traction and signaling system, and various bottlenecks were removed by working with a mission mode.

Chennai – Gudur Section: High speed test run at 143 kmph

After the sanction to run at a maximum permissible speed of 130 km/h MAS-GDR section, BGMallya, General Manager, Southern Railway conducted a high speed trial run with a top speed of 143 km/h and inspection of the window after Chennai – Gudur. The General Manager was accompanied by Desh Ratan Gupta, Chief Engineer, Ganesh, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai and senior officials on board a special train formation. During the speed trial, the train covered the 134 km stretch between Chennai – Gudur in 84 minutes with a top speed of 143 km/h.

Speed ​​upgradation in Chennai – Gudur section with full compliance with mandatory requirements

Following the Railway Board’s guidelines to increase the section speed in all ‘GQ-GD’ routes of Indian Railways to 130 km/h, Chennai – Gudur becomes the first section of Southern Railway to get a speed upgrade of 130 km/h.

The Railway Board and the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bengaluru have laid down certain requirements to be met to upgrade the Chennai – Gudur section to the recommended speed standards. A series of trial runs were conducted by the Railways and RDSO to assess the suitability of track, traction, signals and rolling stock. after complying with all the stipulated requirements, the section was approved to run trains at 130 km/h on 5 October 2022.

Indian Railways said in a statement that to equip the Chennai–Gudur line to handle trains running at 130 km/h, the following works were carried out:

The standard of interlocking at all stations has been upgraded

The maintenance requirement for track, signal and TRD assets and rolling stock is increased.

The curves in these sections were taken care of to have sufficient transition length for the proposed speed where possible.
