BHUBANESWAR: The Sambalpur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has penalized a Chinese company and a Kolkata-based medical equipment supplier for selling faulty ultrasound machines to a district hospital.

Dr Debasis Behera and his wife Dr Sandhya Kar of Sambalpur bought an ultrasound machine worth Rs 8 lakh in 2015 from Mindray, a Chinese medical equipment manufacturer in Shenzhen, through agents Hospital Supply Company Pvt Ltd based in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. .

However, the two doctors found that the machine was not working properly, it had errors in its monitoring applications and even the quality was low. The organization pointed out that a doctor needs a faultless diagnostic system to provide quick and accurate treatment to his patients.

He observed that the Chinese company and their suppliers failed to ensure that the machines supplied to Dr Behera and Dr Kar were free from defects. The agency ordered the Chinese company and its suppliers to replace the defective ultrasound machine with a new one with the same specifications within one month.

In its order issued on October 18, the panel said that if Mindray and the vendor fail to supply the new machine to the doctor within the stipulated time then it will pay them Rs 8 lakh towards the cost of the equipment.
