Six EU regions and five Japanese prefectures EU-Japan region-to-region innovation cooperation under the EU International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) program managed by the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) and the European Commission’s External Policy Instruments (FPI) selected to participate in the project.

The aim of the project is to support European regions and Japanese prefectures to exchange best practices and knowledge to improve and internationalize their regional innovation strategies while promoting international value chains. Cooperation will be based on smart specialization strategies of EU regions and regional innovation and competitiveness policies of Japanese prefectures. They focus on common policy priorities in the EU and Japan, such as the green transition, industrial transformation, digitization and social innovation.

EU and Japanese prefectures participate in study tours and joint seminars and meetings. The first study visit of EU regions to Japan will take place from 13 to 19 November 2022. They will be divided into two groups, each going to Aichi and Hiroshima and Osaka and Oita prefectures respectively, and the two groups will meet to go together. Kyoto Prefecture. They hold working meetings with each prefecture to share knowledge on regional innovation policies and conduct site visits to observe advanced innovation projects and technologies.
