Simulation games are becoming increasingly eccentric, it seems, with developers romanticizing mundane and backbreaking manual labor as a kind of escapist fantasy. We find it endlessly fascinating when they succeed, as anyone who has played PowerWash Simulator can attest.

But here’s a new one for you. Train Life – A Railway Simulator promises to let you play as both a diver and a company manager, and it will fall to you to not only drive passengers and freight across 10 European countries, but maintain the machinery, hire conductors, manage their contracts, and optimize which routes you take, and make sure everything gets where it needs to go, and on time.

The latest DLC for the game introduces the legendary Orient Express, which must be handled the old-fashioned way. Players must shovel coal to power the behemoth and manually engage the regulator handle to get the thing moving. There will be unique scenarios specifically tailored for the Orient Express, and we have to hope that at least one will involve a certain Belgian detective and a seemingly unsolvable murder mystery…
