Mumbai: Air-conditioned (AC) local train passengers were in for a surprise after finding a local resident during the morning hours on the Western line on Monday. Western Railway (WR) officials attributed the situation to a technical problem in one AC train that led to the cancellation of 15 AC services during the day.
“We were waiting at Borivali in AC local at 08:26 but an announcement was made that it has been replaced by a general local. We have paid for AC train passes and are forced to travel in regular local during peak hours. It has have been instances of AC not working properly, especially in the evenings. After paying extra, it is not fair not to have the proper facilities,” said Sarita Doshi, 45, a regular traveler at the 08:26 AC venue from Borivali to Church Street.
A senior WR officer said that one train faced a technical problem with the tire turning mechanism. “The additional parts required for the same had to be ordered from Pune, which caused a delay and we had to cancel a few AC services. However, we ensured that commuters are not inconvenienced by running regular services and avoiding crowds,” he said .
WR runs 79 AC local services on a daily basis, 15 of which were non-functional on Monday due to a single rake having technical issues. There are five other rakes with WR that were operational and the remaining services were operational as per schedule.
