The City of Burnaby was recognized with the Spirit of Innovation Award from the Municipal Information Systems Association (MISA) for BC 1 Call’s successful automation of the Dial Before Dig process, saving staff time and money while providing fast 24-hour customer service. .

The city received more than 10,000 requests in 2021 through BC 1 Call, an essential resource for contractors and homeowners providing schematic information about underground utilities for construction and renovation projects. By automating this service, the city will save approximately $500,000 over 5 years, as well as free up staff to work on other important projects.

“Improving customer service for residents and businesses is a city priority, and this is a great example of innovation making it easier to do business in Burnaby,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Congratulations to our Geographic Information Systems team for taking an innovative step towards automating this service that will bring significant benefits to the community in terms of security, efficiency and cost savings.”

Before this service was automated, it took staff about 15 minutes to process each request. Now callers are provided with information within 3-5 minutes, and the service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Each year, MISA BC recognizes municipalities for their achievements in information and communication technology. The Spirit of Innovation Award recognizes the bold steps the city has taken to increase service speed and accessibility while saving Burnaby taxpayers money.
