Consumer confidence has fallen further than seen in the GFC, leading many households to scale back their Christmas spending plans.

Westpac-Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index decreased by 6.9 percent in November, and now it’s just around the corner from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Christmas spending plans have slowed significantly this year,” says Westpac economist Bill Evans.

“Nearly 40 percent of shoppers expect to spend less on gifts this year — the highest number of cutbacks since we started asking the question in 2009, at about 33 percent.”

But separate figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that many people are but in order to reduce the expenses that they spend a lotand a significant increase compared to 2019 in clothes and shoes (up to 35.1 percent), entertainment and culture (up to 31.4 percent), tools and household appliances (up to 24.7 percent) and food (up to 17.6 percent).
