After acquiring the Alberta Midland Railway Terminal (AMRT) in Canada’s greater Edmonton region, operator Alpenglow Rail Services and investor Connor, Clark & Lunn Infrastructure are expanding their operations as an intermodal hub and rolling stock maintenance center.
Located 30 km east of Fort Saskatchewan in Lamont County, the 120ha AMRT terminal is connected to both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific and is the only terminal in Alberta’s industrial heartland to have this dual access. The terminal provides wagon staging and transit storage for industrial customers in the region and has space to store 1,400 wagons and a loop for block trains.
Alpenglow Rail Services, which also owns two other freight terminals in Canada and three in the Gold Coast region of Florida in the US, now plans to expand AMRT services to include intermodal transshipment and wagon cleaning and repair.

“We serve many of the same customers as AMRT at our other terminal locations, which gives us a unique opportunity to grow these relationships,” says Alpenglow Rail Services CEO, Mr Rich Montgomery. “AMRT has some unique features that are difficult to replicate, including dual Class I service, a strategic location in Alberta’s premier industrial hub, and ample land for development and expansion. Having dual service to multiple Class 1 railways gives AMRT’s customers competitive options resulting in lower transport charges and a much larger network of origin and destination points.”
“Our rail business has continued to deliver strong performance through the turbulent market conditions we have experienced over the past three years,” said Connor, Clark & Lunn Infrastructure president, Mr Matt O’Brien. “AMRT represents an important addition to our growing rail investment portfolio.”
