Now that Frankie Farley’s removal as president of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is being considered by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), we must continue to promote the game of chess to the general public. If we aim to make chess a national game, or as close as possible to it, we have a long way to go.

Chess Olympiad is a sure way for our players to get titles, so we don’t have to wait until the Olympic year to start preparations. Instead, we should be doing tournaments and continuing to improve the skills of our juniors, as Marcia Lee and Anand Raghunaut have been doing for years. These two officials of the GCF devoted much of their time to promoting the popularity of chess. playing at Giftland Mall last Saturday; senior players inspire the community by holding synchronized exhibitions.
